Residencies

Karen Wimhurst has been resident composer for a number of organisations

MoDiP - The Museum of Design in Plastic 2018 - 2019

Artist in residence with Museum of Design in Plastic.  She curated her own project w-RAP which featured a three part process of creating works and then recycling elements of them to build the next work.  w-RAP 1 was written with pupils from Ferndown Upper School, looking at the history of plastics, their meteoric rise and place in the world today.  Elements of their w-Rap band was then taken into the soundscape of her opera Synthetica.  This in turn formed the basis for a short radio work w-Rap 3.

Mpingo Woodland Project - 2016

Work in southern Tanzania performing in villages in association with MCDI, community and conservation initiative.

Plymouth University 2007 - 2009

Composer in residence with Peninsula Arts, including the site specific work The Arc of Possibility for the opening of the Roland Levinsky Building. Darwin and the Barnacle Music theatre piece for baritone and cello

Common Ground, Confluence Project 1998 - 2001

Composer in Residence on the Confluence Project, Common Ground. Following the course of the River Stour over a period of three years, the composer wrote a number of works for people in the Stour Valley.

 

Works including:

  • Silver Messenger for choir, children’s choir chamber ensemble, windband

  • Pipeworks for sax quartet and plumbing instruments

  • Floodlines for string orchestra, accordion and drums
